Ignore and Blocking

Answers to Questions

Dj-Slim yes, they should get a message "Captain: The chatter you are writing to is under age, in order to write private you need to be accepted on this chatters buddylist"

And to your question about what settings the average user can put on reciving private and public messages.. Im so happy you asked... check this out...

=======================
FILTER USERS:
=======================

In the list of users in a chat room...

[_] Dont show girls who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Dont show guys who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Unless they are on my Buddylist
[_] Unless they are on my Favoritelist
[_] Unless they have me as their favorite

I dont want to see public messages from...

[_] Girls who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Guys who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Unless they are on my Buddylist
[_] Unless they are on my Favoritelist
[_] Unless they have me as their favorite

I dont want to see private messages from...

[_] Girls who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Guys who are
Age From [___] To [___]

[_] Unless they are on my Buddylist
[_] Unless they are on my Favoritelist
[_] Unless they have me as their favorite

That should satisfy even the most critical chatter :-)

mmjustcooking, auch! you are right, what if they click reject by mistake. Hmm perhaps we should add 2 buttons... [Reject] and [Reject Forever], and then let the reject forever add that person to the block list with the "Block apply to my buddylist" (see further down about blocking)

Favorites, sure you can send them gifts and perhaps a loggy etc, but we will make that expensive so they dont do it too often.

Info about users ignore. Yes I think we should have a button in /UserInfo where you can click and see this users ignores and even remove them.

Good point about the abuse of taking off ignore - putting on ignore etc.. hmmm perhaps we should put a timer on that one. E.g. so you cant remove someone from ignore before 60 minutes later, that should take care of the problem.

Loluss good point, but kids normally dont care. We will warn them when they log on the chat for the first time cause we will monitor everything they do.

The Ignore / Block System

Here are the first screenshots that we have produced...

Take a look at it. This gives the chatter a lot more oppotunities to costumize his/hers ignore.
And navigators will have a /ForceIgnore where they can put two users on each others ignore lists, and they cant remove these again for X days. I think you will find that one very usefull.

But what other features could we have here? I'm sure you can come up with some.
(ignore gifts from chatter... naaa thats just stupid hehe)

Ohh, and if the user clicks "Report Abusive User" link, then he gets this one...

My idea is that we can have report abusive links everywhere and that the reporting user always must give a reason so the navis can understand what it is he finds abusive and investigate.

Questions to You!

1) What other functions do we need in the Block / Ignore system?

2) The buddylist warning system. On what ages should it warn?
When he is 47 and she is 12, thats an easy one. But what when she is 15 and he is 17?
Where is the limit? I need some help here.

  • Can I suggest the message that is sent to a user who tries to PM a chatter that is underage doesn't say they are underage.

My reason for this is because if you send a message to a child offender that says "This chatter is underage therefore you must be on his/her buddylist to talk to him/her, it might make them even more keen to try and get on that list, even if it means them creating a fake account.

Whereas if it just said "You must be on this users buddylist to communicate with him/her in private" then it would give no clue as to whether or not it was a child... meaning it makes it that little bit more difficult for the offenders to pin point who is and isn't a possible victim ;)

    Am I making sense?

  • I also don't think you should have the buddy list age limits set as low as a gap of 2 years (15-17)...

I think that a child of 15 should receive warnings for anyone over 25... That is what is considered to be the final adult milestone (at least here in the UK). You can go to a youth club up until the age of 25 so there should be no reson you can't chat to a 15 year old online, providing you're not trying to coax them into sleeping with you.

So working on that basis, I would say the limits could be for example:

Age 9 - 12 can talk freely to anyone up to 18. Anyone over that age, they need to be on buddy list to private and will be warned about eachother's age.

Age 13 - 15 can talk freely to anyone up to 25. Anyone over that age must be on buddy list to talk and will be warned of eachother's age when requested.

    I think that seems reasonable.

  • Torben i see where your going with the filter users bit, but its screaming concerns at me.

Basically a chatter ,lets say male aged 30 can block all minors from seeing what hes saying in the public room, so this chatter thinks he can now use sexual chat. However others in the room can see what hes saying and are worried because minors are also in the room, not knowing the chatter has them blocked.
So do we say its ok because minors cant see it? I dont think so. We do not encourage sexual chat in main rooms and this feature i think would cause too much aggrevation and confusion among chatters and navis who would once more need to see exactly what blocks the chatter is using.
Surely the ordinary ignore would do for blocking a particular chatter from seeing your public chat and not a mass block of age groups.

By all means yes, let chatters have the choice of blocking pm's, they have been asking for this feature for a long time.
Also the blocking of shipmails/logbook messages from a chatter is good as lots of chatters do have ones on friends list who they like but are sick of receiving pointless rubbish in their logbook/shipmails lol.

Would the 'make me invisible' be like normal ignore now?

At the moment i cant think of anything else to add to the block/ignore but im sure i'll come up with something lol

As for the ages, i think anyone over 18 should receive the warn if they are adding a minor(under 16)and vice versa.

Some chatters do add their siblings and parents/children so there are big age gaps.

  • I agree with mmjustlooking on this one, would cause alot of confusion in the main rooms.

To answer your question "The buddylist warning system. On what ages should it warn?
When he is 47 and she is 12, thats an easy one. But what when she is 15 and he is 17?
Where is the limit? I need some help here."

I believe that anyone over a 10 year age gap should be the age limit.

  • I think Torben already said that navigators would be able to look at a chatter's ignore list... unless I read it wrong :-s

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 14:09

  • 1) Nothing for me :)

    2) My opinion is: at 16 years there are no more warnings. Under 16 years the user will receive only warnings from chatters of age

  • (little) ps: I have just added a comment in the section before, I am sorry for the delay)

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 14:58

  • A small point i wish to make is that maybe when pressing /ignore or whatever, all those boxes specified should be tick already and then press block, rather than having to tick a box. If a chatters still wants them to look at their profile etc, then they can untick that option. Generally, when i used /ignore, i didnt want them access anything of mine, as a general rule anyway. Would that not be the case?

  • I just have one comment to make.

The ignore feature which is a forced ignore, if something was misunderstood and they forced ignore was put in place e.g two friends becomming ignored for x amount of days then how would that be sorted?

I know two people who this have happened to, and they have to change names to speak with each other.

  • im a chatter on the youth deck and i found chatters will create fake names to be able to use the older rooms on the chat. i feel a idea might be if a chatter signs up that the mac address of the pc is linked to the acount to stop chatters signing up for a older acount onces they have a kids acount when they r like 16 pretending to be 18

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 04:26

  • Shouldnt over 13's have a choice wheater to be block or monitered? at the end of the day they have seen it all and been there. under 13's eg 4-13 should have that taken away as they are only kids and not everyone that age will see it and id be so shamed if my 9 year old sisters was to view that content. But as a chatter since age of 12 id be intimidated if i was to be watched.
